Just guessing... But isn't the sexual attraction to small children the same as being straight and being attracted to adults of the opposite sex? Or being gay and being attracted to adults of the same sex?

And then some people are attracted to feet (and all sorts of other things). I suppose that attraction is just as strong as the above attractions?

Also I am just speaking of the sexual attraction men have. I don't even want to try to figure out women!

Anyway, back to the question... If the above is true, then getting someone to stop being attracted to small children would be the same as getting a straight man to stop being attracted to women or a gay man to stop being attracted to men.

So far as that goes, I've noticed my male dog, who has been neutered, is not sexually interested in the least in other dogs (people's legs, etc.).

Perhaps that is the only answer? But I suppose that would not be "politically correct" and I'm not suggesting that be done, however I know a person who was molested as a small child and he would be all for that being done to the person who molested him! (He is in his 30's and still has nightmares about that - PTSD.)

How would we know they were pedophiles if they never acted on it?
Are they a friend telling us?

I'd say therapy...maybe EFT or EMDR could get rid of some traumatic memory of
something that happened to them as a child, a common reason...reframing the
memory, some light hypnosis?

Remembering the person has got to want to change.

@The OP's question: Very possibly Yes, considering that he already know that pedophilia might be caused due to something in some people's brains and considering how quickly technology and knowledge progresses as time goes on.

As for this question, if they have urges which they want to (and should want to) get rid of, then how about offering them a voluntary castration or removal of the ovaries?

I don't think it is possible to "cure" them, but if you cut off their equipment, remove both hands, cut out their tongue, and brand a big danger sign on their forehead, it might be possible to turn them loose back into society again.

There is no telling what science might come up with. It's possible that sometime in the future, scientists will discover the center in the brain that causes pedophilia and it might be possible to laser it out.

Maybe it will turn out to be some sort of chemical imbalance that can be treated with a pill. For all I know, it might turn out to be some sort of vitamin deficiency.

But no cure with the current level of knowledge.

I would normally never even think about this topic outside of the normal advices to my child to beware of the overly or uncomfortable affection of men, but...

Recently, a well known and well respected member of my community was arrested for downloading child pornography. My daughter knew this person from school and activities, but I had cursory contact with him so I had no real opinion of him personally. Until now. Now, I just wonder how someone with so much going for him could risk do much. But it is, what it is.

I have given it a lot of thought. My daughter and I have discussed his situation many times. She is a teenager, but she is intellectually precocious. She feels that although child pornography is WRONG, she said at least he didn't pursue kids. He kept it to himself. I explained how pornography exploits children against their will, so he is no innocent. Better, but still guilty of child abuse.

I think...before anyone jumps on me....I repeat....I think....sexuality is formed early in life. A sexual attraction to the opposite sex, the same sex, an animal, an inanimate object, etc may be formed by a person's first or closely to the first sexual image or sexual interaction(s) with or without thier knowledge or consent.

I think people exposed to sexuality at a young age may view sexuality from a young age POV. They equate a young girl/young boy as sexual because that is their first sexual experience and it is imprinted on their brain.

I feel a majority of people probably realize some of their predilections are depraved...attraction to children, or S&M abuse (maybe a youthful spanking was erotic to them), or some other experience in youth that imprinted an unusual sexual desire. Maybe pedophilia is a safety issue...a child will not judge, is easy to love, etc. Maybe sexuality was extreme verboten in their homes and they felt children were a safe zone, as they were children themselves....anyway, my point is..... maybe people get stuck in their first "sexual" experience/thought/process and it manifests into pedophilia, bestiality, fetishes, etc.

Most people may be able to ignore and divert their "turn-ons", but maybe some cannot... SAD when it involves hurting others.

Food for thought.

Know what's weird? I've known 14 year olds who have relationships with 30+ year olds and think nothing of it. In fact, they often admit they like older people...it's really weird, and I don't approve of it, but hey, whatever floats your boat. Just so long as you guys aren't having sex and your parents don't mind it, I really don't see anything wrong with it.

And no marriage, THAT would push the boundary too much.

They best way to cure pedophilia is to have their victims violently oppose them. Usually deadly force is required means to an end. It's why so many mental health professionals who treat sexually deviant people because victimizers themselves.
