Everyone is always telling me to be tidy, that it will make me feel better, and help organize my life. However, as soon as I tidy up a space and make everything super-neat, I feel, well -- unhappy. I will almost immediately go and throw clothes on the black of a chair or stack books on my night table. Is anyone else like this?

Nothing wrong with mixing it up. Keep the floor clean, and pile crap up on a chair - the best of both worlds.

I for one don't get emotional either way. I feel great when I finally getting around to cleaning up a room, but also don't despair if I let it go too much. So I suppose I differ in that in a happiness rating system cleaner does win. And to those telling you to be tidy, tell them to **** and mind their own business :-) , unless of course your personal messy includes month old food and fecal matter :-)

I don't see what's wrong with having books on your nightstand. Why is that considered "messy"? You're allowed to have a life. A house isn't a museum.

Is "everyone" really "always" telling you that, or is it just one person?

When my house is all together and tidy...it is so boring ...
I walk into it in the morning to make coffee and it's just 'boring'.
Looks great and all...but I'm not some sterile, tidy person...

Shrugging shoulders.

How you live and feel on the outside is an indication of what's going on inside.

I know this sounds very strange, but an empty kitchen sink triggers an anxiety response. I have no clue why. Some sink-related trauma in early childhood? Haha!

So, I make sure all the dishes are washed and the sink is clean and then put a couple of cups in it filled with water.

Keeping stuff around doesn't matter. As long as you can find what you want and it's not actually dirty (dust, mold, rotting food, pet hair, etc.), it's fine I think.

When I feel that my life is in order, I don't care how messy my house looks. But when my mind becomes disordered, that's when I go on a tidying-up spree!

When I use to visit a friend who's house was perennially tidied up, to feel more comfortable, I'd go to a bookshelf in the living room, before I sat down, and turned one book the other way! Then! I could relax!
