Why is the accusation of homosexuality such an insult?

It seems like this is the best "backhanded" way to insult someone, without actually using profanity or inappropriate/aggressive language.

It always seems to bring out the worst in people. Why is this?

I think Johnny Galecki, from the Big Bang Theory, has the best response I have ever heard when is asked if he is gay.

Go to 4 minutes into the video to see it.

I don't think it's that much of an insult anymore. Maybe it depends on where you live. But it's lost a lot of its sting, these days, now that being gay is normal. No one really cares anymore.

The worst insult is when you're 15 and told you're socially inept.

The worst insult is three words: "Is it in?"

I actually thought of an answer that doesn't berate homosexuals. Being called (and/or thought) gay hurts because it instills the person with fear that there's something about them that causes people to potentially perceive them as gay. I think this is true for both boys and girls, men and women. However, this type of insult seems to be used toward men 90% of the time. If you think I'm BS'ing that this also applies to women, think about the implications of the word 'dyke'. Why I think a possible perception that we're homosexual when we're not hurts us as human beings is because it threatens our sex instinct. Seriously, as a straight guy the last think I want to be thought of is gay! It turns women off and the last thing most guys need is more difficulty with women. Besides it threatening our sex instinct, people do seem to instinctually be digusted by homosexuality and/or a socially constructed distaste for it, so that plays a role in why it hurts too.

How does that go down? I can't imagine middle or high school kids literally telling other kids "hey, you're socially inept!". Are you saying that when people call people gay (or similar) that's the same as calling them socially inept?

Sorry, but I just don't buy it. He is an entertainer and he thrives on getting applause. He knows that by saying something unexpected, while also politically correct, that he will get that applause.

I don't look to actors for moral guidance, in general.

I want to add that in my life when I was in college I mostly hung out with straight guys who did not worry if people thought they were gay or not because they were secure with their sexual orientation.

Then in the past few years I actually had a straight guy lie to me and tell me he was gay thinking it would cause me to help him more. It did not and while that is sociopathic behavior I find it interesting that in a world where many gay guys feel the need to stay in the closet in my world I met a straight guy who felt the need to well be in the closet on being straight lol

The word homosexual is typically used in the media by not-friendly-gay people. LGBT friendly people use gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender as words to describe sexuality. In time, it will be unnecessary to use descriptors for gay people. Just like it's becoming obsolete to use race as a descriptor, as the population becomes more diverse, it becomes more intermingled genetically with different races procreating, race will become irrelevant.
