Not that I think it would be revealing because she would just give me some story which didn't really amount to anything close to the truth. It doesn't stop me from wondering, though. I occasionally think of events in the past, which is not to say I DWELL on such events.lol I haven't thought of my thirteenth birthday in many many years, but a friend mentioned her granddaughters birthday and it reminded me of mine. When I was 13 my mother gave me a fur (albeit rabbit) coat and her diamond engagement ring. She said those are what a woman wants from a man and now I had them from her and I wouldn't need a man to give them to me. I hated that coat and was embarrassed to wear it.

I have no idea my father's opinion about the ring. Mother didn't wear it, anyway. One would think she was trying to steer me away from boys, but she was eager for me to date and I started dating at 14. My boyfriend's mother would take the two of us to the movies and drop us off and pick us up.

Oh, well It really doesn't matter in the overall scheme of life and living.

What's your question, OP?

I've never heard of giving a 13-year-old a fur coat and a diamond ring. I checked your location to see if you were in Europe. I suppose residents of New York or North Dakota could use fur coats, but they're pretty rare in the US. I also don't understand the disparaging attitude people have about rabbit fur. I have a rabbit fur Russian hat (I love the white color!), and have been surprised to find that some people (some Russians) think it's chopped liver, lol!

But I digress. At least your mother remembered you on your 13th birthday, and marked the occasion in a special way. Some parents think that once children reach their teens, they no longer need birthday parties, or anything special. Apparently your mom felt that becoming a teenager required a special occasion, like a rite of passage. She was being thoughtful in her own way.

This part does seem rather strange to me. I would not give either of my daughters my engagement ring, until I pass away. The part about the fur coat and ring, being what women want most seems obtuse and shortsighted; even on a mainly material, a good home seems far more important to me. Most of all, love and caring is paramount.

Thanks. I also think it was strange.

I'm not sure a question was needed.

Is there any chance that she did it more with "humor" than in being serious about what she said. What she said was not that unusual because that was said often in years past when women were considered, well, there is no nice way to say, "inferior" and attracted solely to material things that came with marriage. "Diamonds are a girl's best friend" - that era. Yuck!

So some parents do things that their children think are odd whether they really are or not. A lot of parents do the best they can when dealing with children that do not come with an owner's manual and instruction book.

Sometimes common sense is better than an owner's manual.

It was definitely from that era, but it wasn't done with humor.

Of course, that's true.
