And maybe people too. The rivalry is usually played out in sports games. Like the Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers are rivals. What is the psychology behind the need to have someone or a town or a team that one feels is a need to be better than? Maybe natures way of improving the performance of someone or a team. Since nature always evolves toward the highest form of anything it produces maybe that rivalry is just what nature needs to bring out the best in us.
Competition feeds the ego. Everyone wants to feel better than someone else. You don't even need to be in teams or plat sports to do it. You can sit at your workplace and feel like you're better than your co-workers, especially when co-workers do a bad job. You can secretly gloat knowing you're better than them.
The games would be boring otherwise. Rivalries bring out the best and sometimes the worst in people, and that is what makes those games more interesting.

There is no psychological component to this, it's simply business, butts in the seats. More of the visiting team fans will travel to those rivalry games, whether college or professional. If the home team is doing poorly, they can still get close to a sellout. New Years Day is a good example, with the division winner Seahawks going to Santa Clara to play the rival 49ers who are in last place at 1-13. There may be more Seahawk fans than 49er fans there.

I believe competition is the opposite competition gives you humility because you get knocked down and knocked down and there's always somebody better
It teaches you discipline to try harder
It rewards achievement and a work ethic
If everybody gets a trophy then what's the incentive of trying to do your best
That's what makes it emotional and fun to watch. How fun would it be to go see Superman or Batman if there was no Lex Luther or Joker? Here, the Eagles are the superhero and the Cowboys and Giants the big, bad villains
