(I'm not sure I'm in the right forum. I couldn't really determine where to put this question, so if it should be somewhere else, please move it there.)

I'm curious why, in this day and age, so many people still answer phone calls from unfamiliar numbers. Given that 98% of today's phones display the incoming number, it's easier than ever to know whether you want to answer or not. I haven't answered such a call in many years.

And yet, there's always something in the news about new phone scams that people are falling for. I still hear friends gripe about annoying sales calls or surveys coming at the worst possible times. I don't get it. Why are you still answering?

And caller ID. Every person/entity that I am open to receiving calls from gets entered into my phone's contact list. Everyone else can go pound sand unless they leave a voice mail.

My BIL recently asked me why I haven't been answering when he calls. I checked my phone and said, "You haven't called me!" He said, "My office number changed, it may be showing 'unknown.'" BINGO

Some people answer because although they complain, they really don't mind enough to put a stop to ROBO/sales calls, etc.

I recently got an angry voicemail (I don't answer numbers I don't know) from an older man who was yelling at me and threatening me because I was supposedly a telemarketer (I'm not.) Turns out that my number was being spoofed by telemarketers so that it came up on caller ID, not their own number. I still wondered, if these calls were so annoying to this gentleman, why he didn't just not answer/block it.

I never answer the phone at home, unless they are people I know and start leaving a message, if I'm home I'll pick up and that is what I tell everyone. I don't memorize numbers any longer, so, if you call, please start leaving a message, and if I'm home I'll pic up, if not, I'll call you back, but I won't answer numbers I don't recognize.

I don't get that either, why the heck would someone answer unrecognized calls?

Because we don't have a cell phone, when I want to call someone long distance (a word that's probably going out of usage nowadays) I use google phone, which always shows up as unknown to the person I'm calling. I know that I just have to start talking and they'll recognize me - sometimes I have to invent a lot to say before they get from wherever they were over to the phone. That's a problem with modern-day life and security, and sales calls, etc., that I recognize and have to work around. No problem.

I hate answering the phone. But I've missed many calls from my husband's doctors and clinics as he's going through cancer treatment. So now I'm at the mercy of the phone.
Someone called the other day and it had a local area code (because it was a spoofed number) and it was some doofus trying to get my credit card info. Luckily I have ways of dealing with these people.

This is exactly why I started answering all calls again. You get a call from the surgery center, or from another office of your doctor and you miss the call. Not always convenient to wait for the recorded message to begin. Then you have to call back if you have questions. Just seems a waste of time.

I can handle robo calls, don't get many of them anyway so I don't let them control my use of my phone.
