I was listening to a radio show and a woman called in to answer a question: What year did the singer Billy Joel start taking piano lessons?
a. 1955
b. 1975
c. 1935

I remember the woman was older than me. They asked her age. In age she was roughly halfway between myself and Billy Joel and had always been a fan, which meant (to me) that she should have known better than me. Anyway she got the answer WRONG.

How could that possibly happen? I think the question itself was like a freebie. But I remember thinking, women (strangely) are not good at these kind of questions. She might even get it wrong. Sure enough, she did.

Do women think differently?

This has nothing to do with women in general, just that particular woman. If you quiz me on my favorite musicians, I will know the answers despite being a woman.

In the past women were socialized to believe they weren't good at math. My mother (born in 1923) believed as much. But it's not true. The most you may expect is that women learn more effectively in cooperative settings, sitting around tables, versus competitive individuals. I saw a study done that indicated this, but this may be outdated by now, also.

I am not familiar with the research on this, but my sense is that there are no appreciable differences between the male and female brain; intellectual differences (all things being equal) are due to socialization. So, OP, your one example is anecdotal.

I would add that remarking that "women are not good at these kinds of questions" is pure sexism, inaccurate and insulting.

I don't understand men (people) who base their conclusions on single examples that just happen to stand out to them because of a bias they have.

Talk about bias confirmation. Do you really think this single example where there's not even evidence of arithmetic being botched (the woman may not be that big of a fan to know Joel's age) confirms anything? Scientific method. Look it up.

I don't understand why people post crap like this. That's what I don't understand. I also don't understand how people can possibly think like OP does.
