Most psychopaths are not serial killers, just troublesome people. Robert Hare is a good read on this subject.
Robert Hare has done research on psychopathy. "Psychopath" and "sociopath" are lay terms, the former being a criminal term. The terms are not the same.
There's lots of debate regarding nature vs. nurture so I am curious, when it comes to the most evil people to have existed such as Vlad the Impaler, Hitler, Stalin, Elizabeth Bathory, Mao, Pol Pot etc. as horribly unspeakably evil as they all were, do you think had all these people been born into caring, loving, nurturing homes they would have had a chance at being good people?
Hard to tell to be honest... There are so many factors. And we must consider some of the people who have grown up in hateful environments and then have gone on to be good people. That said, I believe that each of us has a certain trigger that if pushed could send us on a rampage.
If I recall Hitler's parents were certainly not prizes. However I don't believe they were totally responsible for the creation of Adolph Hitler. He was also a product of World War 1 and the aftermath. If Hitler had died in WW1 obviously he never would have risen to be the head of the Nazi party. But he had a whole bunch of followers and fellow members .... it is possible one of them would have become head of the Party.
Certainly, family upbring, parenting, home environment, have a huge effect on a child. All the stdies prove that, on average, a child raise in a loving family with their own mom and dad, will have a huge positive effect on a child
Do you think even the most evil of people could have been good had they grown up in a good caring family?
No, because some people are just the way they are and their families, good or bad, affect them, but don't change them.I feel some people just have a solid core in them that can't be changed. I also feel some people are born with their wires crossed, so that no matter what you do for them, they are physically damaged and can't be changed, no matter how loving the family is.
I think nurture is very important, but it's not everything. It's a mixture of nature and nurture. Some very evil people came from relatively normal families, and some abused children grow up and deal with the abuse in early adulthood via therapy and become wonderful, loving, caring individuals.
