The only places I recall seeing mangroves in PGI canals is on inside or outside corners that have silted in, and once the mangroves take hold, the silting gets worse. Even if you could remove the mangroves, you might be in for a big dredging bill to get enough water under a lift. Better to stay away.

Just trim them hedge high, no need to kill them as they look good when kept up with and provide an area for fish to hide or eat. Nobody I know gets a permit...but don't put the branches in the trash . The crazy stories about owners getting huge fines are usually about acres of protected wetlands...and in many of those cases it was worth the fine from the rich owner's standpoint to get their view and water access back.

The are far from endangered (it seems) and they are almost impossible to kill while pruning. The laws are in place to discourage large landowners and developers from bulldozing huge areas IMO. A few mangroves should not keep you from buying a property. I like my mangroves, keeps my shoreline from eroding and gives me better fishing off the dock.

I see many seawalls that have them growing...and then they are magically gone the next time I pass by. (insert Clint here)

Default Mangrove Removal Charlotte County

Apparently it is now legal to completely remove ALL mangroves from your lot line along a canal in Port Charlotte. A neighbor just did it and was turned into code and they cleared the complaint as "unfounded" even though the pile of mangroves, both cut and pulled out by the roots were in the front yard and the evidence of a clear water line was inspected by none other than Code guy Charlie Busch. What a joke.

I'm assuming that you might know the guy who turned the neighbor in, and this person is not happy that the code guy didn't fine him. Great first post. lmao

I see No benefit of Mangroves against a seawall.. In Feel They ( IMHO) Should always be removed in such situations to eliminate restricting canal access. They are NOT Native to the canals, the canals are all man made and these are just invading and will in time reduce property values and desirability . This is not in keeping with the intention of the canal communities.. Think to the future ( PLANNING)

You hit the nail on the head. We passed on a lot last year exactly because of Mangroves on it. Didn't want the headache.

The lot still sits unsold, by the way. And the mangroves are probably that much bigger by now.

Tell me that doesn't negatively impact property values and I'll gladly offer to sell you a bridge in Brooklyn...

I revived this thread because? I really feel it could save people some, heart break ,money, aggravation and maybe hahahaha some jail time ( just kidding settle down : ) So I made an actual call , no more guessing no more saying what we wish was true or repeating BAD information.. I called 239 344 5600 ( ask for Tim) they will connect you to him.. Explain your issue or concern and give him an address.. He does ( I assume) a Google Earth Search for the address and can tell you a lot.. further discussion afforded me a lot more information about the does and the dont's concerning Mangroves and their trimming and removal in the State Of Florida. AFTER reading about owners responsibilities and rights at the before posted web site in this thread and THEN Talking to Tim........ I now "Think" I have a pretty Good Idea of what is expected .. I wanted this info for some shooting from the hip decisions concerning water front lot purchases for family..IMHO having talked to Tim.. Basically if your lot /water front is Mangroves line to line.. you will be allowed to $$ Trim Them to about 6 feet ( NO LESS) and clear enough of them for a walkway to your dock and lift..Are There Variables? YES THERE ARE.. Do Not Count On Your being Given The Best Case Scenario as your out come.. ON EDIT: KatMart: if you see this post and make THE CALL that neighbor is in for a HUGE surprize..No Good Old Boy Connections will save him now.. $$$$$$$$$$$
