Decided to walk the beach last night with my DH, when we got out of the car the smell started, and stronger as we got to the beach. A lot of dead fish along the water line. Another first for me (us) the effects of the Red Alage.

The only positive I can take away is that I got to see a lot of different kind of fish, and something that looked like an eel of some type.

I hope this does not last long, and that we can go back to walking the beach and filling up my jar with shark's teeth

Happens a few times each year. It's mother nature, love it or hate it.

Labor Day at Englewood beach was heartbreaking to say the least. The weather was great and the water temperature a divine 88 degrees but the sand was filled with pollution. Children were digging into the sand and scooping up all the cigarette buts discarded on the beach and left there. All the sand along the shoreline is covered with cigarette buts. Every inch of it has cigarette buts. It takes an awful long time for the filters in cigarette to disintegrate. People with infectious diseases such as colds and hepatitis are dropping their cigarette buts and children are picking them up while building their castles in the sand. It is horrible and I have never seen so many cigarette buts at any beach before. All it takes is a small box, an empty bottle or a bag to put the cigarette buts in and then trash them. Everyone around me was smoking at the beach. I would like to see smoking and none smoking sections at the beach. It would be easier to clean up the buts after those who are too lazy to do their job. If it has to come to that then be it. The beach is there for everyone to enjoy not just the careless smokers.

The red tide happens, it's a natural thing but not pleasant for us at all. A few years back I remember it lasting a long time. I don't think there was red tide in our area last season. Until it's gone I won't be at the beach.

There's no red tide right now. This thread is two years old and the above "polluting" idiot decided to resurrect this to complain about butts on the beach.

Lol! Man I need to learn to look at the dates. There is however red tide north of here moving south. It's now 5 miles off shore and of course it's not known yet if it will affect our beaches.

Just got to say I am not a fan of cigarette butts that are discarded by people who smoke. If you want to smoke that is fine, but please make sure your butts are placed in the trash not on the streets or in the water ways.

I don't think there is anyone that doesn't know how long they take to completely breakdown.

Here in southern Maine, smoking is not allowed on our local beach. I love that we don't have to breathe the smoke or navigate around butts left behind on the shore.

South Carolina has billboards along the interstates the read, "Our state is not an ashtray". It's sad that some smokers need to be reminded of that. I wonder how effective they are at lessening the litter.
