I take it you're talking about your pool's heater? Regardless of what type it is, it should have a flow meter that won't let it turn on unless there is a certain GPM flow through the piping.

Newer electric motors with a veritable speed control, are using inverter controls, that change the sign wave length and there by strengthen the motor at low speed.

I run my pentair variable at 1500 rpm for 8 hours a day and water is always crystal clear. Swg and heater run fine at that speed. I lowered my pump down to 1100 rpm temporarily just to see if pentair swg would still run, no problem.
