For the past half dozen years I've rented a deck boat to take some senior friends on an outing. I've rented boats in a number of locations-- Sarasota, Bradenton, Siesta Key etc.-- and this year we're looking at a boat in the PC area. As I'm not at all familiar with that area thought perhaps someone might have some advice as to what to expect.

Typically our friends enjoy relatively a leisurely cruise to view things such as nature settings and houses none of us can afford. Any advice as to what areas to look at and perhaps what to avoid appreciated!

Do you plan to cruise around the harbor, canal cruise, or go the 18 miles out to the Gulf/ICW?

I think it would take a good sized hurricane to find us 18 miles out to the Gulf.

Definitely stay in/around the harbor and coastal waterways. In fact most of the rental outfits state explicitly that you're not to venture "offshore".

Having owned a boat I'm a reasonable competent operator however I've seen some people rent boats that shouldn't be allowed anywhere near a power boat. Some of the rental outfits seem to be relatively lax in their screening criteria.

We rent from Stump Pass Marina. They have nice boats with depth finders & GPS with channel markers. Located on Placida Rd just south of Englewood. Head south on the intracoastal and you'll see lots of nice houses very few of us can afford.

People take deck boats out to the Gulf/ICW From PC/PG all the time. No big deal if the weather is nice. I wasn't talking about going "offshore" out INTO the Gulf with it. I'm referring to the 18 miles south and west through Charlotte harbor to get to the ICW/Gulf. Or if you were planning to stay around PC/PG in the upper harbor. IF you were planning to stick with the upper harbor, fine. Rent from Fisherman's Village, or El Jobean. If you're planning to head out to the ICW, you may want to rent from Englewood or Placida so you're already right there.

Ah-- got it. Thanks for explanation. There's an outit (swflboatrental.com) that states they will deliver a boat to multiple locations including PC. Might contact them to see if they have any additional advice were we to rent from them. Previously we have been up/down the ICW from most of the areas north of PC so heading over that way from here might be a good option.

Ok have fun. Just know that the water in the harbor (PC/PG) is not the pretty turquoise water you may be used to along the ICW. It is brackish (mix of fresh & salt water since two rivers feed the harbor), so the water is more brown/tea colored. Just FYI...

+1 on going down to the icw or Boca pass / Cayo Costa area even if you don't go out into the gulf. Nice waters, nature at the park, and homes to see on Boca Grande.
