Hello!

My family is considering moving to Punta Gorda to be closer to my parents. We have an 18 month old son and hope to grow our family further. I know there are a lot of retirees in the area, but what is the outlook for young kids?

Thinking specifically of summer camps, sports, Christian schools, music classes, etc.

Thanks for any insight!

I'm 38. I believe the median age for the city limits is 67 yrs old now. Charlotte County median is 56 I believe. Sarasota County median age is 55 as well. A lot of times I go into a public place I feel I'm literally one of the youngest people there lol.

SWFL is a older folks, retirement area. Manatee County on south each county has a median of age of close to 50 or older.

I lived in Naples when I was a kid in 91-2002 before moving back north for awhile.

SWFL was catered to the older folks back then, however there was still a fair mix of younger people as well! Now, SWFL seems much much older than when I lived here before. Census for SWFL counties also back up the age increase as well.

I'm seeing a lot of 2 story new builds between Port Charlotte , North Port and Englewood. I would think it would attract more younger families.

52.5% of Charlotte Co. is 60+
70.0% is 45+

You will find greater diversity and choice if you look into the City of Sarasota. More employment opportunities outside of the service industry as well. Charlotte County is a nice area but it has limited options for young families.

Sarasota County still pretty old for my taste, BUT Sarasota is a lot closer to the Tampa area which has a lot more stuff to do too. Manatee County, Bradenton is a better option too and you can look for a job in St. Pete too if you really have to and just drive over the Skyway Bridge.

Housing cost a lot more in Sarasota too compared to North Port and Charlotte County. North Port would be cheaper for housing and commute to Sarasota which is 30 miles away. If your job is close to I75 in Sarasota it wouldn't be as bad of a commute.

It's about a 30 minute drive from Punta Gorda to the Gateway area of Fort Myers where there's been quite a bit of job growth around the airport and FGCU, which has spiked home prices. That 3o minute commute could save a lot of money in terms of real estate prices.

Whew...this is so accurate. We dragged our feet in 2019 on a purchase and have since been priced out.
