I live on Long Island and in my car I listen pretty exclusively to NPR ( WNYC ).
No matter what kind of radio I use , I am unable to receive this station in
my house . Is my car radio just more powerful than a household radio ?
I would love to listen to it at night so I don't have to turn on the TV .

WNYC-FM is a low power station, only 5,200 watts. Does your house have aluminum siding? Metal does a good job of blocking communication signals.

5200 watts is not "low power" considering the height of the station's transmitting antenna.

Wattage alone is misleading. A station's effective radiated power is a function of its wattage and height. WNYC-FM is 5200 watts at 415 meters above average terrain, which would give a similar signal to a 44000ish watt station at 100 meters.

The station is close to the maximum power for an NYC FM station at its height. It should have a similar signal to the other big NYC FMs broadcasting from tall skyscrapers.

For OP, in-home reception is often more challenging than in-car. Car receivers usually have better sensitivity and there are fewer obstacles to deal with outside. You could try getting a better radio, like a C.Crane or a Sangean, or just listen online, which is probably the easiest solution.

Don't know the OP's location. Intensity matters since stronger radio waves can penetrate buildings closer to the transmitter site; while there needs to be fewer barriers closer to the fringe of the coverage area.

Is the OP listening to WNYC-AM 820 kHz, or WNYC-FM 93.9 MHz?
