When I see typically shy, typically nocturnal mammals in daylight in a heat wave, I think of Rabies first. I spotted a fox living in a median on Crescent Commons Drive a couple of years ago, and it was out in daylight. It is long gone.
We have a ton of squirrels in Cary, but I read years ago that they typically die in the encounter that transmits rabies to them.
Foxes, rabbits, possums, all good reasons for a fenced yard for dogs or kids particularly when you think of rabies.
