It has been pretty hot lately and I was in need of a visit to a Tiki Bar for refreshment yesterday so my wife and I escaped from Raleigh and ventured down to Carolina Beach for the day. The trip took us 2 hours and 15 minutes from our driveway in N. Raleigh to a parking spot 5 yards from the beach entrance. Once we got on I-40 in Raleigh it was a straight shot the whole way to the coast. We grabbed lunch at the Ocean Grill & Tiki Bar - Mahi Mahi Tacos for my wife and a Fried Flounder basket for me ... then hit the beach. I was amazed that we easily found a metered spot ($1.25/hour) in a small lot right in front of the beach. It was literally just a few steps away from the sand.
Once we staked out our spot with beach chair and umbrella we took a quick dip in the cool ocean water. It felt wonderful! At one point during the day there were actually some pretty decent waves and a few surfers out there demonstrating their skills. Around 5pm we packed it in and headed back to the Ocean Grill to have some cold drinks at their tiki bar out on a pier overlooking the beach and ocean. It was fun watching the late afternoon crowd linger on the beach while sipping a cold one from the tiki bar.
A band was setting up on the pier and gettign ready to play just as we departed around 6:30 to head back to Raleigh. There was a little bit of slow moving traffic leaving the immediate area but after 15 minutes or so it was smooth sailing all the way back to the Triangle and I was sitting on my couch in my N. Raleigh home a little after 9pm. Good times!

Reason: spelling errors!
Adding this to my to-do list. Now I just need to find a friend who is flexible enough to go spend the day at the beach, though I suppose I could go alone, it would be more fun with a friend.
I've stayed at Beachside Inn, and Dolphin Lane. They're not swanky by any stretch of the imagination, but they're reasonably priced compared to some, with ocean front rooms. I find you spend little time in your room while there, so I can live without 4 stars! We like to go there and just park...walk to everything, and these two are just a couple of blocks from the center of town.
Thanks for the pics NRG!! As always...you make me want to be there!
Neat trip NRG..I was at Wrightsville Beach recently so Carolina Beach is next on the list.
