Good point - I was thinking of the infrastructure once the Smart Grid is rolled out where the electric meter will be able to talk to the gas meter, water meter and devices inside the house such as thermostat, water heater, pool pump, dishwasher, etc, etc.

Of course the whole objective of the Smart Grid is for the Government/Corporations to be able to remotely control the amount of energy you are using. If they think you have your fridge and or A/C set too low they'll decrease the amount of energy you use and increase your discomfort---because after all , they know better.

I don't think the current version of the ZigBee spec includes the ability to query a device to determine the current setting, like on a thermostat. It can only send a temperature offset or absolute value.
