I'm getting a 383 stroker put into my 1986 IROC Camaro, and my mechanic informed me that i'll need to run 103 Octane occasionally, if not all the time. I was wondering if anybody knows of any locations in Durham that have it? I know that I can add octane boosters to 93, but straight from the pump would be preferred.

Are you talking about 103 leaded or unleaded? I don't think anyone around here sells 103 unleaded. The highest I've seen unleaded is 100 octane. There is a Handee Hugo's off of Kildaire Farm and Maynard that sells the 100 unleaded. Now, if you are talking about leaded, there are some places around that sell that but I don't think they let you pump it into your car so you may have to bring a canister with you. I've seen leaded go up to 117 octane.

As for octane boosters. I don't think you will find one that will boost your 93 octane up to 103.

You're right. Boosters only up the octane a few points, from 93 to 93.7 max or so.. but i'm referring to unleaded. I may have to see if the airport will let me get jet fuel. Or buying toluene to mix in. I will also look into the place you saw selling 100 unleaded, that's probably my best bet!

Jeez, I never even knew gas octane went that high. I am guessing it must be more expensive per gallon.

I don't know a thing about gas, but I do love camaros! Let me know if you want me to take it for a spin for you, after you get the whole gas thing figured out !

i used to put 100 octane in my crotch rocket (aka sport bike) when I had one. It's not that expensive when you're only buying 3 to 4 gallons at a time.

Yea, maybe 4 dollars a gallon or so. And I'm HOPING that I won't have to fill the entire tank with it, I should only be having to add a gallon in at a time. So per tank fill-up, we're only talking an additional $5 - $10, so it's not expensive in the scope of things. To the person who wants to take it for a spin when it's done, SURE! It should be a beast, 440hp to the rear-wheel. I've still got to upgrade the rear-end and transmission, but that'll come in a month or two. It'll still be driveable before that, just not as much torque.

You can get 103, 108,115, leaded at most sanctioned drag strips. I know you can get 108 leaded at VIR.
The price about 8.99 a gallon.
I hope that Camaro is not a street car because it will put you in the poor house feeding it gas.
I used to run race gas in my 408 stroker until I lowered the compression down to 9.5 to 1. I makes no sense to run high compression on the street anymore

Before you go to the airport read up on jet fuel. JetA is basically kerosene. If your car was a diesel you could run it.

You could buy 100LL at the airport but the LL stands for "low lead".

Also - technically - if you plan to drive your car on the street then you need fuel that has highway use tax included in the price.

Pretty sure VIR also has 100 octane unleaded, but my buggy does fine with 93.
