We're taking my in-laws on a small 4-day weekend for their 35th wedding anniversary. There are several ways to get out of town and over that way - what do you recommend as the best overall route to avoid traffic. With two "almost 70" and one "under 2" in the car, the shorter the ride, the better
Find the shortest efficient way to US 64 from your home.
Probably NC 98 East from Wake Forest.
US 64 will take you directly to Manteo, mostly freeway, and jumps the sound to end at Whalebone Junction at Nags Head.
That's what I was thinking. I think 540 will do the trick to 64, then straight from there.
We'll be in Manteo for 2 nights, then down to Pamlico Sound for one night - would the same route back be ideal? If so, we'll have to retrace our steps north for 90 minutes before getting back on the mainland for the rest of the trip.
We've lived here for going on 14 years and never been to the OB...pretty interested to see what we find! Strange that we've been all over Europe, Asia, and many of the other US states, but haven't found ourselves at the OB yet.
The same route back would be most likely the best. Otherwise you have a 2 hour ferry ride from Ocracoke, after an under one hour ferry ride from Hatteras to Ocracoke. So not a day trip for folks who aren't road warriors.
We love Hatteras Island. It was a huge factor to help us decide to move here from Pennsylvania.

The ferry rides wouldn't be bad if my daughter has the ability to get up and run around...she hates being cooped up in the car for hours at a time. But, with 3 hours of ferries and another 3 hours (unless it's shorter from Ocracoke to home) in the car, it would certainly be an all-day affair. I'm used to doing 10-14 hours on my motorcycle when touring, but with four others in tow, I don't think I could hack it

Ferries would not be a great choice. Not great for a child to run around on them. You can stretch your legs, but the little one needs to be controlled.
And it would be truly a very full day for all.

I haven't been there since they built 540, but I think taking 98 all the way to 64 just before Spring Hope is still the best route from Wake Forest. Google maps shows it about 7 minutes and 16 miles shorter, plus the drive is much nicer. Depending on the time of day 98 could be a lot more than 7 minutes quicker.
PS Going 98 you get to use the full length of the new bypass.

Good point, thanks!
