Any recommendations for an affordable lawyer to prepare a will and the associated documents one should have if they are a parent? I have emailed a couple attys that were recommended to me and the cost was around $3,000. Ouch. Is that typical, or is there someone out there who will do a quality job for less?

Seems like my case would be pretty easy since we are renters and really dont have many assets.

You should be able to get this done for $1k or less if you pay an atty. to do it. There is also some really good software out there specifically for this. Fill in the blanks/questions and then just get it notarized. My wife and I did our will, etc... about 8 years ago and remember we paid maybe $800 to an attorney in downtown Raleigh.

Why pay?? You can get all the forms, legal for your state from Internet ( incl. detailed description how to fill it out), and have it notarized ( your bank will do it free ). This documents will be legal, no need to go to attorney.

Thanks for the suggestions. I feel more comfortable having it done by an attorney.

Is it possible to do the papers yourself and then get it reviewed by an attorney for a lower fee? I'd like to know for myself as well. We are preparing to get those things in order, too. I would think that since they charge by the hour it would be cheaper to have something reviewed than to draft the original.

Try Kenneth Murphy at Knott & Berger, 783-5900. Someone on city-data recommended him. We've met with him once. He and the firm are first class and he's reasonable.

I agree that a qualified attorney should prepare your estate planning documents as opposed to the do-it-yourself online documents. My partner and I used the lawfirm of Brady Morton and were very pleased with their thorough knowledge of estate planning issues. Our fee was about $1600, and was worth every penny of it to us for peace of mind.

We also recommend Kenneth Murphy at Knott & Berger. He was very professional, honest, and his rates are much more reasonable than the other attorneys we contacted.

I recommend having an atty draft the docs for you. This fill in the blank stuff is ok for a quick band-aid but you really need a document drafted with you in mind for a more permanent fix.
