anj - thank you. ... you mentioned medicaid costs, infact due to over payments the state has to reimburse the fed gov millions of dollars - wonder what that does for ins costs -

When comparing NC to anywhere (not just LI) you save a lot in some areas but not in others so the financial difference is not always better, a lot depends on where you are coming from and what you do, etc...the bottom line is, when making the move, sometimes you have to take away money ... if money if the only motivator then people relocating to NC will not be any happier when there they are.

You are quite right. There is no perfect place. I still do believe we could be quite happy in NC. Change is sometimes hard to do!! Anj

Saying that Health Insurance is free to all state employees is a bit misleading. It is true that an employee of the state does not contribute to pay for his or her health coverage besides paying deductibles and copays, but if you are married without children it would cost at least $380 to add you spouse. It only cost a little bit more if you add children no matter how many. And of course adding dental and vision is additional even for the state employee. When I worked in the Private Sector in Richmond, I contributed $45 dollars a month for health and dental coeverage. When I added my wife it only cost an additional $30 a month to add her to the helath and dental coverage. That was a bargain comapred to what it is here. Norht Carolina County Health care plans vary from coutny to county, but in general I understand they are better than the state's plans.

Sorry I can't help you--- but I said State government did...I have no idea what type of insurance city & town governments offer their employess. (Probably varies by each city, most likely.)
And even for state government, I don't know what the insurance costs to family members. Since I'm unmarried and child-free, I've never actually asked.
