Just wondering if the SA bell ringers are paid for their service. With the coldest Dec on record so far these folks have sure had a tough time. That being said I did see a unattended kettle in front of a Wal-Mart today and found the attendee staying warm inside behind the sliding doors. With wind chills probably in the single digits that would be tempting.

They do not get paid; they are purely volunteers. Good people...

I read an article about the Salvation Army several years ago (so things may have changed). At the time the person in charge of the entire organization made a salary of $13,000 per year and got a rent free house house to live in, like a parsonage. No private jets - they fly commercial. Good as it gets..

Most army location use volunteers. In recent years in some other places they have had to resort to paying some as they couldn't get enough volunteers. You should report what you saw to the Wake co location in Raleigh, they need to know this. Some volunteers at local non profits volunteer because they 'have to".

The Cary Rotary Club is ringing the bell at Stone Creek Village Harris Teeter tonight.

Volunteers for charity.

I can assure you that some Salvation Army corps DO pay people to ring the bell. This varies from county to county, state to state. And can depend on the leader of the corps and can vary from year to year. Many in poorer counties do pay folks as its citizens are too busy working to volunteer.

As for the comments about their leader being paid $13k. Their "salary" is in fact, just like any other minister, it supplements their lifestyle and is for personal expenses. They are provided furnished housing, vehicles, a retirement pension- non contributory, and other miscellaneous necessities. At present they are in dire need of new recruits. Young people are not drawn to their ministry as they once were.
