Some folks shoot actual GUNS off at midnight! That may be what you all heard. It's a NYE tradition (albeit a dangerous one). I don't know many young folks who do it, but many older people do.

Generally, anything that flies or bangs is illegal. Stands around July 4th have the little tame stuff. Many people go to SC or TN & buy what they want, use them at risk of being arrested.

Strange, we live in a world with nuclear weapons but we ban fireworks. But, as others have stated, some people have been incredibly foolish with them.

I wish. Bottle rockets are some of the best fireworks made, IMO. Fairly cheap too, & very few strays to start fires.
