I was wondering if anyone had any open mic night recommendations in the area. I have written some songs and looking for a forum to sing and play them (mostly acoustical or acoustical electrical guitar type stuff).

I get the feeling there might be some places near NC State or UNC. I'd call any local music shops and start asking there. School Kids on Hillsborough might be a good place to start.

I know a couple in Cary that are fairly well attended; Mac's Tavern on Wednesday nights and Abbey Road.

You can also go to meetup.com and search as a lot of people organize stuff like this through it. When I first started playing, I found a group on there that was open to musicians. They'd get together at a bar and change out, play together, etc twice a month. (this was in Dallas) It helped me locate open mics that I otherwise would not have known about. I can't pull this up at work but a quick google search shows that there is an open mic group on meetup.com

I've done Pinhook and Broad Street Cafe.

Pinhook is a beginner's place with easy competiton and very supportive people. And no audience. Cameron, the producer and sound man, is A-1. A pro and a real nice guy.

Broad Street Cafe is a nice place but the regular sound man is passive-aggressive and he'll cheerfully mess you up. Jason the regular MC is great and a swell fellow but the guy who covers for him when he has to work has some issues too.

Just an FYI, but the broad street cafe just closed its doors (think this was as recent as last week).

I finally checked out open mic night at Abbey Road last night (Wednesdays at 9:00) and really enjoyed it. We stayed until around 11:00 and listened to four or five different singers who each sang a few songs. They were all great. There were still a few more waiting to sing when we left.
