If high-end shopping is a priority for you, look to Charlotte.

Hands down Charlotte, much more going on there, hard to believe this is a Capital City !

I guess you've been to Albany! Or Springfield! Or Sacramento!

As far as capital cities go, this place is rockin'!

But yes, I think Charlotte would be better for the OP...except maybe for the low crime rate.

Also, there is whole thread on Charlotte vs Raleigh in the NC section, up one level.

Charlotte is a more populous city and metro and has more ammenities when it comes to restaurants and shopping. Charlotte has a very lively downtown bar district with 175 restaurants and bars. South Park Mall is the premier shopping destination between Atlanta and DC. Nordstrom and Neiman Marcus have located there only two North Carolina locations at South Park. Google South Park Mall Charlotte for more info.

I think this is changing though. I think Raleigh is continuing to grow as more and more people are coming to the Triangle. This is sort of our renaissance and last I heard the projection over the next ten years was that Raleigh will continue to boom. As more people come in I think it's reasonable to expect the city to offer more and more things to do, more restaurants, more clubs, etc.

Charlotte has some hard times ahead of it with the collapse of the banking industry there, but we'll see - its still a great city. Nothing beats the South Park area in the state imo for high end shopping and dining, except maybe uptown Charlotte. Great theater scene, golf, close to the mountains, but Raleigh is 2-3 hours from the mountains and beach as well.

Lesser of two evils...Charlotte.I relocated here (Raleigh)almost 4 years ago from Arizona, hate every minute of it.Trying to get back. But if I had to chose Charlotte is more polished, cosmo, aesthetically pleasing, newer. If rehabing delapidated 100 year old brick buildings into restaurants are your thing,Raleigh has that feel.

You could be equally happy in either spot. I would recommend you visit both. You will find hundreds of thousands of people just like you living happily in boht locations.

BTW, to the poster a few posts up - There are more Nordstrom stores in NC than you think. There is a Nordstroms at South Point Mall in Durham.

One thing the Triangle isn't lacking is shopping!
