Raleigh used to have a section on their website for volunteers opportunities I think? The News and Observer used to periodically run a listing of ops too.
Please consider helping at a nursing home by feeding residents at meal times. Some have Parkinson's or other conditions which make it difficult for them to pick up food and feed themselves. The nursing home on Sunnybrook Rd used to allow volunteersm not sure if they still do? Also, visit residents and spend time talking with them or read from the newspaper, bible or a book.

Yes, I just started volunteering with Meals on Wheels of Durham with my young boys and we have enjoyed our time. It's a great way to get a 4 year old involved in community service! The recipients love the young company. As stated, Meals on Wheels always needs help! :: Meals On Wheels ::
For the arts, SPARKcon in Raleigh, put on by the Visual Art Exchange (VAE), is a terrific volunteer run festival in downtown Raleigh in the fall. I got involved last year and had a blast putting on the "spark" I was part of.
