WRAL news announced that the cheapest Toll fee for the 540 extension will be 15 cents a mile with a NC Quickpass which is a pre-paid transponder which will be on sale from October. If people don't use a quickpass then they will receive an invoice in the mail from the Turnpike Authority and pay 24 cents a mile
How's that going to work? I'm rarely on the last part of I-540 anymore (between Chapel Hill and Hwy 55), but sometimes need to get to 55. Where will the toll "booths" be? Do you pay when you get on or get off, etc.??? I've never lived where there were tolls before, so I'm pretty clueless.
No. Just the newer sections. I know this irks people but that is the reality of the situation.
I think the WHOLE loop should be tolled until it is payed off. The way it is set up now, you have the Haves of North Raleigh and the have-nots of everywhere else.

The toll centers have already been installed on NC540 near Chapel Hill Rd: The transponder in your car will be scanned when you enter & exit NC540. The toll will start at the point where 40 & NC540 meet. If you do not have a transponder, there will be cameras that will take a photo of your license plate & you will be billed through the mail.
