I picked up some compost from the city of Raleigh yard waste center. Has anyone else ever used the compost from this source, and, if so, were you satisfied with it?
I'm getting ready to till it into my raised beds, and maybe it's my imagination, but it seems to smell a little funky.
I haven't used Raleigh's compost, but in general I steer clear of any municipal compost. It typically contains grass seed and weed seed (from clipping overgrown fields and dropping it in the yard waste). This is not something that you want to compete with in a vegetable garden.
It's typically fine for use in yards-- the weed & feed will keep any weed seeds from growing up.
I have used Raleigh compost in both yards and gardens. I don't have any unusual problems with weeds - the heat generated during the composting process sterilizes most of the seeds. My biggest complaint is how much plastic and trash is in it. I spent quite a while picking it out, but for the price I was OK with having to do that.
Can you get compost from Raleigh even if you live just outside the Wake co. line? How much does it cost? I'm assuming if it's from "the city", you have to pick it up?
