Ok guys I have contacted Trugreen, Scotts and Fairway Green and they all want around $80/treatment and they want to do 6-8 treatments a year. I have to think I could buy a spreader and the bags of fertilizer and the necessary chemicals to kill weeds for less than that annually. My problem is I need someone to advise me on what to buy and when to put it out. Ideas?

We went with The Weed Man. Our lot is around .20 and it is $41 8 times a year with no contract and can cancel at any time. They boasted a 90% retention rate and the guy who is taking care of our lawn lives about 5 minutes up the road so he is local.

aerate/overseed in fall
winter fertilizer a few months later
fertilizer + weed pre-emergent in early spring

That would be a good start

Why not just follow the scotts 4 step program then?

We always did it ourselves in the past and we just went to the Ace hardware up the street and asked, and they were more than happy to tell us what we needed to do from season to season!

If you plan on taking care of it yourself, I suggest you follow the Tall Fescue Maintenance Calendar posted by the Turf Science Folks at NCSU. They are local and know what the are talking about. Tall Fescu Lawn Maintenanc Calendar NCSU Turf Files

I am not against using Scott's products (I use them), but I would NOT follow their 4-step program schedule as they suggest adding fertilizer in July-August. That is a terrible idea in our area due to the high heat. You shouldn't be putting any fertlizer down in the Summer here in the Triangle.

FWIW, I take care of my own lawn, but see why some people pay pros to do it. Fertilizing is easy. The weed killing is the tougher part and the pros have access to the most effective chemicals. If you do go pro I suggest you check out a local operation by the name of Eastern Turf Maintenance. If you go on your own, I suggest that you do NOT use Weed/Feed combo products. Most of them are terrible and lead to poor results.

Good Luck!

Rory (or anyone else), care to elaborate a little more about NaturaLawn? My wife and I are contacting them for an estimate, but would like to know a little bit more about them from someone who has tried them already. We can't find a single review of them on the web, other than your recommendation here. Thanks!
