We moved here (clayton) from out of state and have to dial 919 for every local landline call we make. I thought that meant there were already multiple area codes in the area.
Yes, the ten-digit dialing went into effect earlier this year because they were officially starting to assign the 984 numbers to carriers for distribution to customers. But whether any of those number have actually been assigned to people seems to be up in the air.
My parents had the same phone number from the day they got married until the day they died.
My mother still has a landline, in addition to her cell phone, with the same number since I was about a year old. Decades ago. Has even moved multiple times since then but still has the same number. Even changed company. She's now with time warner phone.
Ha Ha Ha. Thanks for the laugh. It's true, my cell number is a 202 number from when I worked in DC. Is 2005 the first year they forced companies to allow porting of cell numbers?
I'm resurrecting this thread again, thanks to a news story announcing an overlay to 336...
I still haven't seen any 984 numbers. Has anyone else? I was going to see if I could get one when we moved late last year but decided to just port our old number since our youngest has just learned it.
UNC Hospitals are transitioning their numbers to 984 ones, with temporary forwarding from the old 919 ones. I don't know how far along they are, but some numbers have already changed there.
The N&O reports that the Triangle is getting a new overlay area code - 984, which will necessitate 10-digit dialing once it takes effect. Some will remember that about a decade ago, BellSouth started the transition to this overlay area code, but aborted it almost as soon as it started.
What are you talking about! 10 digit dialing is already here. I've been dialing 10 digits for the last 6 months or a year at least on my landline. Seven digits no longer work. We need new phone products that increase the amount of numbers that can be allocated to speed dial.
