For those that do not escrow, when do you pay the taxes on your home? The Wake County bill says it is due on Sept 1, but delinquent after Jan 5, 2012. If there is not a penalty for paying between those dates, why shouldn't I wait until late December to send the check?

There is no penalty for paying anytime between those two dates. If you want to hang onto your money as long as possible, then pay near the end. I think that is what the escrow companies do, collect it every month and pay out as late as possible.

Just get them paid by 1/5/12 and you will do fine.

My primary home is escrowed, but I believe they cut the check sometime in December.

My two rental houses are paid out of pocket, and I pay them on Dec. 30-31 for tax reasons (otherwise I'd wait until 1/5). They can't have my money until the last possible moment.

We pay in November/December. I never like to wait until the last date, but there's certainly no incentive to pay earlier.

The NC system has it's roots in agricultural reality.
The tax bill is fair notice, well in advance of harvest season, of what will be due once the farmer has his crop money.

As for the homeowner...
If you have the cash on hand when an expected bill shows up, any bill really (even a bigger one)... pay it.
Pay it on receipt, file the papers away... and be done with it.

Except that if you don't pay by 12/31 you won't be able to deduct the payment on your income taxes for this year.

I think that he was saying that the OP would be "fine" from a deliquency aspect.
