I read something about this and wondered if it is true and if so, what changes would affect present employees?
Am considering RN positions with both health systems and want to make the right decision.
Also, what pros and cons would you attribute to each?

As noted, it won't happen. Rex has been poaching staff from the triangle's medical community, including wakeMed and WakeMed was tired of it. It happened to other practices in the triangle but only WakeMed complained about it. When this didn't get WakeMed anywhere...the next we heard they made an offer to purchase Rex Healthcare from UNC. WakeMed shouldn't be throwing stones with that big glass and marble house they have
I hope that does not happen. I don't like WakeMed at all. I spent 5 hours there one night for a broken arm and a broken leg, only to be seen (altogether maybe, maybe 5 minutes) by a physician's assistant (PA). and a nurse.
The cost? $2,100, not including the X-rays and radiologist service (separate bill). I know visiting ERs is supposed to be expensive but I had no idea it was this much. How do they justify charging so much?
Next time, I'll be dragging my broken bones to Rex.
WakeMed - Try $8k for a kidney stone diagnosis! Yet you walk in the lobby and it's plush. They have plenty of money to buy Rex. Their business tactics disgust me, they are underhanded and deceptive. I won't go into it here but let's say I have zero respect for them now having been in a tussle with them for months about a bill.
UNC has turned them down on their offer, thank goodness! I would hate for them to have a monopoly here, it wouldn't be good for the community.

Well I hate to burst your bubble, but going to the Rex ER isn't any cheaper.
All ER's are expensive because they have to make up the loss from high malpractice insurance premiums and providing care to people without health insurance that can not afford to pay their bill.

This. You would not believe how many people will go to the ER for just a cold or some other non emergent thing becasue they do not have health insurance so they get a free health care that way.
