I was surprised at how many listings turn up when you find the Music Together web site. It must be the lastest yuppie thing. I assume it's music appreciation, and a time for the mom and baby to interact.
Wait, they have music classes for infants? Like to teach them to play an instrument?
Very good question. My other question is why? Definitely sounds like the mom will get more out of it than the child. Child could be introduced to music in the home (or all of the baby einstein stuff)....
Don't jump on the poor woman. Mama and baby music classes are popular, and basically just expose kids to music, rhythms, movement, etc. The only instruments they play are simple percussion--shakers and drums--sometimes whistles and kazoos for the older ones. Kindermusik is one such class-not sure if it's offered in Cary--google it maybe? Also, Gymboree has music classes like that for young babies.
There are several different places around the triangle. This one is in Cary although I've never been. Itsy Bitsy Baby Spa Programs - Mommy and Baby Yoga,Belly Dance,Infant CPR,Music Together and Movement
It is usually more about getting mom and baby out of the house, mom gets some socialization with other moms in a fun environment for the baby. They don't actually learn how to play an instrument or the words to songs or anything! They get to bang a drum or a shake a shaker just to be exposed to sound and rhythm.
As a PP mentioned, it can be very lonely, exhausting and depressing staying home with a baby with very little socialization. Plus it's a great way for a new mom moving to the area to make some local connections and meet some new people. So yes, these types of classes are equally as beneficial to the mom as they are to the baby!
Have you searched for a Kindermusik class? I did that with my first born when she was a tot--it helped me get to know other moms and we formed a playgroup outside of class. Plus it's lots of fun, and babies LOVE music.
