Hey guys! Ok so here's my situation && any information given will be greatly appreciated.

Currently I live in New York City, but I'm looking to relocate to North Carolina for an amazing job oppourtunity. However the position available is near the Raleigh/ Durham area. And unfortunately I don't know that much about either city. And the only family I have in North Carolina is in Charlotte. I am single, with no kids so the move for the most part will be smooth once the kinks are worked out. From what I've been reading Raleigh closely resembles Charlotte (which is a huge plus). But I would like to know more about Raleigh. (crime rate, indoor/outdoor activities, night life, traffic, school systems, pro's && cons about Raleigh, neighborhoods that are considered good && ones I should avoid, what if any is the difference between Raleigh && Durham) && honestly anything else that would helpful for a young woman such as myself making such a big move.

Thanks in advance to all!

Your best bet is to research the zillions of posts on the topic here on City-Data. Answers to your questions could literally fill a book. Use the Advanced Search option.

You can also find out a lot about Raleigh and other areas (even neighborhoods) by searching for statistics on them from the home page of City-Data.com (not the forum).

Here's a start: //www.city-data.com/city/Raleig...-Carolina.html

When you have more-specific questions, I'm sure everyone will be glad to help you out.

Good luck!

Your second best bet will be to do the "relocate to a new city" thing in two steps.

Find a more casual situation, something like a house share or short term studio rental
in close proximity to work so you can focus on the new job without too much other distraction.

This allows you six months or so of time spent in the area and actually experiencing how all
the things you you do will get done in this new area...
before committing to a longer term rental or maybe even a buy...
and using YOUR OWN experience of all those things you'll only read about here.

Thank you to you both. @lovebrentwood I'm still pretty new to this site but thank you for showing me other outlets on here. I will look into that immediately. && @MrRational I would love to do that if I had the time. I might be taking this job oppourtunity by the beginning of the New Year. Originally I was supposed to be in CLT but things changed kind of last minute. At this point I'm settling with Raleigh just trying to get info on it so I'm not put into complete shock once I arrive.

I just moved to SE raleigh from NY state. We love it! Traffick? Whats that? Even when its busy it moves quickly. The best areas to live are near the campuses. NCstate University is a nice area. There really isnt a lot of crime either.

NY state? That is awesome, I hear that lots of "Yanks" are moving to the area so the transition might be interesting! So being that we are relatively from the same area how would you compare the cost of living? I was thinking that staying close to the campus towns would be my best bet if I want to be "in the mix" (so to speak) but I thought that it would be higher rent, crime && traffic because I assumed it would be crowded. I'm also hearing that North Raleigh is considered a good area? Yay or nay?? lol

The advice offered applies to ANY city you might move to.
Start poking around in the CL ads: raleigh / durham / CH rooms & shares classifieds - craigslist

the first thing to note is that the area is pretty spread out, and there isn't really much in the way of efficient public transportation.

so figure out where your job is, decide what you think a reasonable commute is, then ask: 'What's your favorite place to live within a X-minute commute of Y?" then we can help.

You said "near" Raleigh/Durham.

Where exactly?

Maybe the answer to that question can enable some of us to give you more info.
