After buying yet another bag of mulch from the garden center, I'm thinking this isn't the most cost effective way of going about mulching my flower beds.

If you've used the mulch the City of Raleigh sells, have you had any problems with weed or pest introduction? I'm kind of worried what sort of critters are in their mulch since I'm sure it's made primarily from yard waste.

Many years ago (10+) I picked up several pick up truck loads of Raleigh's mulch to mulch a large portion of my backyard. It is not as pretty at the mulch you buy at a garden supply store. It definitely had an semi foul odor to it and it contained a few pieces of chopped up wood. That being said, it was perfect for what I needed. It covered a large section of my yard for a very, very cheap price. The smell I mentioned wasn't noticeable once it was spread out and I was able to remove the few pieces of the wood I found. I don't seem to remember any major problems with weeds. The soil in that area now if VERY rich and in great shape. The mulch and shredded leaves mixed in over the years did wonders.

I would recommend Mulch Masters or another place that delivers triple shredded mulch if you are going to use the mulch in a major flower bed or location where you want the bed to be a show stopper. If you just want to cover an area just so it looks better than bare dirt or is out of the way, then Raleigh's mulch is fine for that. Again, it was 10+ years ago when I used it last, it may have gotten better. My public service announcement for the day...PLEASE DON'T USE THE RED MULCH!!!!

Good luck and happy gardening!

Ugh yeah red mulch is gross. That's what the people who lived here before us had all over the place.

Maybe I'll do a test run for it under our dogwood and see how it goes. If we end up with weeds over there I won't care as much. Anything will look better than bare, baked clay.

I used to get it when I had a pickup truck. Never had problems with it.

Good to know. I'm wary because many years ago I picked up some compost from them and all it did was set my yard with chickweed. It was awful.

Don't they do it at the Holly Springs landfill sometimes too? Seems like I remember they doing that there occasionally too.
