City of Durham Offers Free Mulch to Local Non-Profits and Community Groups
Applications to Receive Free Leaf Mulch and Compost Now Available

Durham , N.C. – Local non-profit organizations and community groups looking to spruce up their surroundings now have the chance to receive free leaf mulch and compost courtesy of the City of Durham's Department of Solid Waste Management.

According to Donald Long, director of the City's Department of Solid Waste Management, local churches, schools, homeowners' associations, neighborhood groups and other non-profits may now submit their applications by July 31, 2007, to request a free donation of leaf mulch and compost. "We want to do as much as we can to make an impact on our community's aesthetic beauty," Long said. "We hope our local non-profits will take advantage of this opportunity to help make our city an attractive place to live, visit or work."

According to Long, delivery of the free materials may be available on a limited basis, but preference will be given to organizations that can pick-up the materials for themselves. Long said that p rivate companies that will use the materials to beautify properties that are visible from the public right-of-way will also be considered, based on the limited supply available.

Additionally, Long said that individual property owners and residents that want small amounts of compost or leaf mulch for their home may call the City's Department of Solid Waste Management at (919) 560-4186 to request a gift certificate redeemable for a free load of leaf mulch or compost. Delivery is not available for personal loads.

Landscaping companies and other private entities that will use the materials in a profit-making capacity are not eligible.

To download an application to receive free leaf mulch and compost, non-profits and community groups should visit the City's website at Durham, NC - City of Medicine (http://www.durhamnc.gov/departments/solid/earth_announce.cfm - broken link).

Non-profits and other community groups may also request an application by contacting Josephine Valencia, waste disposal manager with the City's Department of Solid Waste Management, at (919) 560-4186, extension 253 or by e-mail at Josephine.Valencia@durhamnc.gov.

Another Durham infobit - Through September all the various trash collections will be starting an hour earlier (due to concerns about overheating) so if you're near the beginning of the route (like we are), you may not be able to count on having time to put it out the morning of pickup.
