There are plenty of courses, both public and private. Getting a tee time is generally never a problem (I have even been able to get tee times last minute at most places). Prices are pretty reasonable and most courses offer coupons through email or through other sources ie magazines, Groupon, etc. You can pay as little as $15 or so at some places (for 18). If you are back in the area, let me know and I can give you a few courses specifically tailored to your skill/etc.
Myrtle Beach (3-4 hours away) has great golfing as well for a weekend getaway!

Having lived in Plano for four years, I can tell you that golf is cheaper and more plentiful in the Metroplex. With that said, there are plenty of options here in the Triangle to keep you happy. In fact, there are a number of semi-private membership deals that can't be beat.
The Triangle also has the UNC-Finley, Duke and NC State- Lonnie Poole courses that are all outstanding.
we don't really have municipal courses here in the Triangle. By and large, there's a lot of semi-private courses. And you can join them. So, you can pay something extra and get priority weekend tee times, and lower green fees (or none), or you can join the masses in the afternoon tee times. There are certainly lots of places to play 5.5+ hour rounds with folks getting their groupon on for one of a few rounds a year.
Within 30 minutes, you'll probably find 10 courses you can play. Make it 50 minutes, and you're probably at 15-20. make it an hour, and you're bringing in pinehurst, which other than the Resort itself, is really cheap for what you get in the hot hot summers.
There are no municipal courses here. I was somewhat surprised to find the relative lack of public courses per capita (compared to previous places I have lived).
There are several semi-private courses and the deals offered are very good (i.e. no initiation fee and reduced monthly for the first year). Some CC's also are offering deals. PM me if you are looking for details on specific courses.

Full disclosure: I get in roughly 80 rounds/year
You could join Traditional Golf. For about $155 a month you are a member of 3 courses. Falls Village, The Preserve at Jordan Lake, and Chapel Ridge. I play around 100 times year and I have my cost per round down to less that $20 per round.
