Is North Carolina still in bad shape with the economy? I am considering moving to Raleigh but I wanted to know if the districts are starting to hire again. I am interested possibly moving next year. I will be looking for teaching positions.
They are definitely looking for special ed teachers (cue goodbyesnow....)
Our school has had new teachers every year we've been here. One thing I don't think many people realize is teachers can put in for a transfer at a certain point in the school year and if the principal accepts them the old principal has to let them go ... we've had teachers who transferred to a job closer to home and then a new one comes in their place (although sometimes it's a transfer as well).

Yep! Special ed teachers are in high demand. they lost many midyear! They were cutting regular ed teachers and vacancies for teachers that transferred were made open to others in the district first. We even had a TA that only got a teaching position midyear because a teacher left after Christmas. And if you are regular ed. there is a chance they will not renew your contract if there are budget cuts or whatever. there doesnt seem to be job security. Now if you're special ed, you'll always have a job, if you want it!
If you are coming from another state, seriously look into teacher pay and hours here and decide if it would be worth it to you. After the higher taxes, more pay into benefits, and much lower pay, I was bringing home 50% of what I made in WI-and I wasnt even one of the top paying districts up there!
I think in the last 4 or 5 years teachers have gotten a 1% raise. Do a search on NC teacher pay. Lots of things will come up about recent state changes in pay. It's not the state to move to if you're a teacher, it's a state to move out of.
North Carolina treats teachers like garbage. I'd look elsewhere if I were you. (My wife just got fed up with teaching, quit, and went back to NC State to pursue something else.)
