Hi everyone! My husband and I are thinking about moving to the Raleigh area in the near future. We are looking for a low crime, family friendly area. I would really like a town with a downtown area that has shopping and restaurants that I can walk to from my home. Our budget is $600k for at least a 4 bedroom, 3 bathroom. I've been looking into Cary but it seems like I would need to drive a lot to get to shopping. Any suggestions? Thank you!
Raleigh:
Cameron Village, and select other Inside the Beltline areas.
North Hills
Durham:
Trinity Park, and if you can get Bull City Rising to chime in, you may conclude Trinity Park is the penultimate Durham destination...
Chapel Hill:
Franklin St, as mentioned, but someone from CH can better fine tune that for you.
Cary:
Join the trend. Buy a tear down and build what you want near downtown, but generally the walkable neighborhoods come in well below your stated price range.
Apex:
Something in the Historic District, or between N Salem St and Williams St. Haddon Hall, but again, you would not have to blow the budget.
If she's looking for walking distance to supermarkets and the like, I don't think downtown Cary or Apex would fit the bill. They have things like tiendas but nothing like the Harris Teeter in Cameron Village. You'd be easy biking distance to the Food Lion on Kildaire if you lived near downtown Cary but Cary's still working on getting more diverse shopping in the downtown area.
Haddon Hall in Apex is not only walkable to Beaver Creek which has super-target, the movie theater and tons of other shopping/dining options.....but also Haddon Hall Commons shopping center which has a Harris Teeter and I believe an Italian restaurant. Historic downtown Apex is also arguably within walking distance (15-20 minute walk maybe) from the southern areas of Haddon Hall.
Look in Carrboro/Chapel Hill area. Lots of bikers, walkers and the place is nationally known as heaven and haven for foodies. Best schools in the state too but you didn't mention need for good schools. If schools are a concern then do research here for problems/challenges in Wake County. Also Hillsborough is a very nice place for a family.
