I am looking to relocate from Land O Lakes, FL to Chapel Hill area. I have 5 kids 1, 6,7,11 and 14. So, I am looking for a safe area, low crime nice neigborhood good schools. Also, if anyone has information on the private schools in the area. What is the avearage cost of renting a home in the area. As we don't want to buy till we get up there and get to know the area better. Any and all suggestions greatly appreciated.

Chapel Hill and Carrboro have great schools and it's a wonderful place to live and to raise a family. We love it here! In fact, a lot of people love it here. Which makes it an expensive place to live and raise a family, at least relative to a lot of other places in NC.

When we first arrived (almost 2 years ago), we were able to rent a place with 3 bedrooms in a great, central neighborhood for 1600$/month, and we got a "deal" because the house we were renting was up for sale and we accepted a shorter lease with plenty of showings. Renting here is pretty expensive - there are a lot of college kids and the demand for larger homes that would work for a family can be pretty high.

If you're not totally set on Chapel Hill, you might enjoy Hillsborough or the northern parts of CHatham County (Pittsboro and similar). Prices there are lower, there are some nice family homes and neighborhoods, and you still get reasonable access to the fun stuff in CH/Durham.

Good luck with your search!

you pay a lot of money in taxes for the Chapel Hill schools, because they are apparently good. If you are going to send your kids to private schools anyway I would think that it would make more sense to live outside the Chapelboro city limit.

j mart is right. the best schools in the state reputation is because of the VERY high property taxes. Why anybody would live in CH and go to expense of private schools baffles me but some do. search archives here as CH and schools are discussed many many times. be aware that not every CH address is in the Chapel Hill/Carrboro school district . it's all spelled out in other threads.

There are quite a few families my neighborhood that send their kids to private school (I don't). We moved here in January and I have 4 kids ages 3-15. We rented for a few months while we figured out where we wanted to live and the perfect neighborhood for us. Let me know if you want more info!

To All,

I am in the same situation as lgb6 moving from Fort Lauderdale, FL. My husband got a job in the Northern side of Durham (zip code 27712) and we are looking for rental communities within a 20 minutes drive from there. I have been looking at some rental communities like Artisan at Brightleaf and North Point Commons all in Durham. We will be visiting the area on 12/7 to make a final decision on where to live. Do you recommend any other rental community in the area???
I have also been looking at the public schools but my hopes are to get my son, now 3, into one of the schools with Pre-K hopefully Montessori or Magnet schools in 2013-14 school year.
