I am new to N.C. from out of state and plan on getting my new plates, registration, NC title this week. I have heard all the fees combined along with the vehicle tax can be pricey. I got a general idea of how much it will be, and was wondering if the DMV will do payment plans or if they require the full payment up front. Anyone have any info they could share? I plan on calling the DMV tomorrow to ask, but in past times I called they didn’t answer so I wanted to ask here too.

The approximate costs are:

Title fee: $52
License plate fee: $36
Notary fee: $5 (approximately)
Highway Use Tax: 3% of the vehicle value (Capped at $250 for vehicles transferred from out of state)
Local property taxes: Based on the tax rate of the jurisdiction you live in and value of the vehicle (Generally about 1% of the vehicles value)

License plate fee and property taxes are paid each year; others are one time fees.

No payment plans from DMV.

I'm pretty sure They take credit cards - except for the notary fee, which is cash only.

Do you have your NC driver's license yet? IIRC, you need it to register your car.

I just registered a 2014 Camry a few weeks back. Durham cost was $525 in total. Other counties might be slightly less. Yeah bring $5 cash with you.

My husband recently registered his car when moving from Florida - it was about $500 bucks. He put on our charge card - I would be shocked if they do a payment plan.

What about the GTP (Global Transport Park) fee for $15.00? I knew this to be a short term tax on the locals down east to expand an airport down east and give the area an economic shot in the arm. Now I see it is charged here in Raleigh. Amazing how temporary taxes just become an every day event.

Are you sure about that? I thought that went away years ago.

I may be mistaken. I pulled my registration that I did in Jan 2019 and it has an RTA for $15.00. Perhaps this is something different? I have exchanged a lot of cars since Aug 2018 and I remember seeing it on each one. I'd be happy to hear what it is.

That fee supports mass transit in Wake, Durham and Orange Counties.
