And Boston doesn't?

I went to Boston in June for vacation. And the traffic and aggression were awful. I forgot how bad it was!

Considering the buffoonery I saw going on yesterday on my commute home, I might actually agree with this article. I was joking with my husband last night that yesterday must have been "drive like you've never been in a car before" Day in Durham.

Maybe the difference is that in NY or Boston you are just sitting in traffic compared to here where you can actually move & get some momentum before hitting someone else?

I have to agree. I love Durham, but I've never seen such idiotic driving anywhere else I've lived. I used to see lots of bad drivers on the freeways in Atlanta and Los Angeles, but around here, lots of people seem to speed recklessly on the surface streets.

The study seems to focus heavily on fatalities, which is an incomplete picture of the driving experience on a day-to-day basis. Massachusetts has a very low traffic fatality rate...lowest in the country I believe. It also has very low drunk driving rates.

But it should lose points based on seat belt usage (Massachusetts is among the lowest in the country) and cell phone usage (Massachusetts has no hands-free law).

So Raleigh ranks #39 and Durham is at #93. What on earth happens at that border?

It seems like we give out a drivers license to any knucklehead that walks into the DMV. IMO, three things need to be in place before you get a license: know what the turn signal is for, speak English, and drive on a learners permit for at least a year (especially if you ain't from here ).

It's all of the triangle. But then again I come from a slower, smaller, area. Not that this is really a city, but the drivers are awful!!

This absolutely baffles me! I'm a native Bostonian, and I can't imagine how drivers there could be rated among the best in the nation. I think that many of them are skillful drivers, but they take too many chances and cut things too close. I haven't experienced the same thing in Durham, but maybe I've just been lucky. Perhaps ZimaCheryl has a good theory about the rate of speed.

I learned to drive in Northern NJ. Durham is like a peaceful massage compared to the punch in the face of driving there....
