Quite a few may be planning this type of shipment right now. Lots are abandoning LI for lower taxes.

My SIL just left Hempstead for Montana.

I once purchased a new car using an independent auto broker. I told them the specifics of what I wanted and they called all around the country finding the dealer who would make the best deal. It turned out that the best deal was three states over.

The broker then used a car driver service that hired retired people (with lots of time on their hands) to take the bus up, and drive it back). The major expense was their insurance. For $300 it was delivered on time.

So my advise to any others who might want to do ship their car, is phone a few Auto Brokers and ask them if they do something similar, and who they would recommend.

I've actually done this for someone once. Depending on the price of the job I'd do it again!

Only problem was, it arrived too fast! I wasn't in Durham yet. They weren't supposed to deliver my car until Saturday but they wound up delivering it five days ahead of schedule. This was because the salesman did not communicate well with the company that actually transported the car (there is a third party involved). So, I would recommend them, but beware of this issue. The salesman drops out of the picture as soon as he makes the "sale" and won't be of much help to you after that point. Be sure to get the number of the actual driver asap and be sure all communication is clear between you and that driver. Hope this information helps someone! On a more positive note, everyone involved was very nice to deal with.
Did they drive the car down or put it on the back of a truck?
