A couple recent stories highlighting how funny NC people are, led by NCSU grad Zach Galifianakis who is starring in "The Campaign", where Will Ferrell plays a politician who likes women and $900 haircuts! The State of Things (WUNC) interviewed Zach on today's program (which also highlighted the Paperhand Puppet Intervention): Vote Zach Galifianakis —

Slate also had an article on all the NC comedians out there, calling us "The Funny State." I particularly liked this line from "Up All Night" creator Emily Spivey: "Everything I write secretly takes place in North Carolina and in the 1980's. I swear to God."

North Carolina comedy, from Andy Griffith to Zach Galifianakis. - Slate Magazine

Not an NC native but love the humor from my adopted state! Gotta go buy tickets for The Campaign now...

We ARE a hilarious population and it's about time NC was recognized for more than southern accents and BBQ! ( though I am very fond of both, being a native North Carolinian). Let's not forget who co-wrote the Campaign-- Shawn Harwell of NCSA, who also co-pens HBO's East Bound and Down (a Smokey & the Bandit -- southern-- reference) with Danny McBride (way funny, except for Land of the Lost in which laughs were not in abundance) and Jody Hill (who was also in Foot Fist Way -- an NC based production-- with another buddy Ben Best (NCSA) as Chuck the Truck). Good ol' NCSA boys with a sense of humor and a zest for mullets. With so much material from which to draw, how can NC *not* be funny. Enjoy The Campaign, I am looking forward to it!

Andy has the North Carolina humor down pat. It goes along with our motto "to be rather than to seem." When someone is trying to show how important they are we just go along until they dig their hole and then here comes the punch line that really puts them in their place. I love it. It is like a reverse snobbery.

My sister and her husband were renting the home my parents owned when they moved to their second farm. It had some issues and her husband was trying to make it look better when a know-it-all neighbor stopped by. She did her usual meddling and then came the deal breaker statement from her. "What are you going to do about that hole over there (where there was a crack between two pieces of wood.) My sister's husband said, "Well, I guess we will have to borrow a crack puller and fix it." She shut up and left.
