Hi There,

I'm a writer who performs most of my work from my home office but I also teach part-time. I've decided to take a few years off from teaching and plan to relocate to NC in 2013. I will need to supplement my freelance writing income with either a college staff support position or another part-time position.

In an ideal situation, I'd love to secure a position before heading down there but it's probably impossible to do so. How long should I plan on seeking employment before securing such a position? Would it take a few weeks or a few months?

Also, I figure that there are so many New Yorkers down there that I won't go into culture shock. Is that true? I'm city bred but I love country living and am seeking a nice balance of city/country life down there. Will I find what I'm seeking?

Thanks for your help!

Took me over a year to get a college position so start getting your resume out there now. Best way to find positions is to go directly to the school's website and poke around HR.

Yes. There are New Yorkers aplenty here. Fear not.

Eva's advice re: applying for positions is solid.

I would not worry about culture shock. There are people here from all over the US and all over the globe. Just plan to be yourself, polite, a good listener, and to respect other people's ideas without pushing your own. I would say being polite would be the number one virtue.
