My lease will be up this fall and to avoid the rat race that is finding a rental when all the other students land in town for the following fall semester. After driving around Carrboro and looking at the rental listings around town I have noticed a demarcation between the properties north of Jones Ferry Road and those to the south of it.
To the north the properties are generally maintained better and it is not a rare sight to see vegetable gardens, whereas in the south the grounds tend to be unkempt and instead of seeing vegetable gardens I can see old furniture or kitchen appliances on the lawn.
Aside from the obvious aesthetic differences is it safe to rent to the south of Jones Ferry Road (such as near the Royal Park GSC apartment complex)?

As a newcomer to the area, I don't know the ins and outs of the Carrboro streets that well. But I definitely see run-down streets in Carrboro. Sometimes I go to the Food Lion on Jones Ferry Road, and it is definitely a lower-income area than other parts. Not sure where that apartment complex is in relation to that shopping center, though.
I don't think there's any clear demarcation line as far Jones Ferry goes. If you think it's okay it's probably fine. If you're not sure, then maybe it's not so okay. Are you talking on the outside of 54? or inside 54? There are some sketchy places here and there, but you'll know it when you see it. Lots of folks put furniture out for free when they're ready to re-home it. Couldn't say on the appliances, but could be the same thing. I know folks who have lived up in the townhouses off Walden Dr near there and that seemed like a nice area. Know some folks who lived on Old Pittsboro and that seemed nice, too.
