Does anyone know the origin of the Tobacco Road "commercial" played during last night's broadcast of the NC State/UNC game? I don't think it was produced by NC State because it doesn't align with the "This is Our State" marketing campaign of the university. The only thing I can figure is that it was produced by ESPN and (perhaps) somehow tied to the documentary that they produced that chronicles State's run to the 83 NCAA title.

That's my best guess too but it's a conundrum to me because aren't commercials supposed to sell something? It didn't appear to be selling anything. It's hard for me to fathom a network like that forgoing the revenue of a 30 second commercial slot in a primetime game.

Game Day was there so they do more personalized commercials for those schools, that's my best guess anyway.

Yep. I've seen them do similar for other schools. Could be a case that they didn't sell that commercial time slot.

Yeah, they usually do an intro piece for the bug game of the week with Gameday. Personally I thought it sucked. Never knew we were located in the mountains.

I saw it too - the message seemed to say, "We're State, and we play basketball too though Duke and UNC are the real teams of interest". I wouldn't have been too impressed if I were a State fan!

I'm a State Fan and I wasn't impressed with the commercial. I hate all the "Tobacco Road" references! I haven't researched it, but it seems that they only started using that reference in the last 10 years or so on game broadcasts. I always think "what road?? show me that road" .

Couldn't they have just replayed Dexter Strickland saying, "These guys are the least of our worries?"
