Can anyone recommend a spot for afternoon tea within
30 min. of Raleigh? The Umstead sounds great, but $32 pp
for tea and cakes is a bit beyond my budget for a group.
Thanks.

The Washington Duke in Durham but I don't recall how much it is. It might be on their website?

Love the Umstead Afternoon tea - I know it's on the high side but an absolute bargain compared to a comparable tea service in a larger city. I have head that the tea at Carolina Inn, as mentioned above, is also very nice. Very southern feeling.

Now, depending on the size of your group and timing of the tea, KomoKomo does a tea service, by reservation, on Saturday from 11:30-12:30. I haven't been to the restaurants but good foodie friends say it's really good and I was intrigued to see a tea service on the menu. $17 might be more palatable...but I don't know what's available. It used to be Wednesday from 2-4 but now that it's changed to Saturday, might have to go try it out sometime.

I wonder if Caffe Driade in Chapel Hill would do an afternoon tea...you can rent space and they certainly have a large selection of tea, as well as pastries from Gugelhupf. Probably not as formal as an afternoon tea but might be fun.

Two questions though - what is the difference between their Afternoon Tea and the High Tea? I mean when it comes to what food/drink is offered.

The other question is how is the parking situation? I can't parallel park to save my life. Is there parking a short distance away? I don't mind walking, but my mom is elderly.

The Olde English Tea Room is in downtown Wake Forest so there is off street parking on White Street and a parking lot close by off Jones street. Jones Street also has off street parking but you just pull into the spot.

The Afternoon tea will have sandwiches, scones, and tea.
