Hello all!

A little background info about me. As the titled stated I am a single mid twenties female with interests in relocating. I presently live in bustling NYC, but have lived in the small (but cold!) city of Boston, and I grew up in the boondocks of Maine. So I have had experiences from both ends of the spectrum. However, now I want to find something in the middle, but with plenty of energy and liveliness.

I have a stable career in health insurance that I can take with me when I move, because I work from home. North Carolina was suggested to me as a place to live as a close friend lives near Raleigh. I am wondering which city and neighborhood would be best to live in? I've been leaning more so towards Raleigh.

I do not own a car, but assume I will need to have one when I move. I also plan to rent when I relocate, with a budget of around 1000 +/-. As you can imagine, after living in NYC for a year I would like to live somewhere affordable and save my money for something bigger.

I hope some of you can help me out. I've been researching on my own, and would like to hear from the locals perspective. I have narrowed is down between moving to CT or NC. However, the affordability, safety, and weather of NC is very alluring.

Also if you have any helpful information or advice that would also be appreciated!
Thank you!

Also, if there are any Hash House Harriers members reading this your input would be appreciated too! Especially in regards to what the kennels are like there. If I do move your pack will certainly be glad to have me!

Have you been here yet? If not, plan a visit to make sure this is a good fit for you. For your budget, age, life circumstances, I would suggest the Glenwood South or Cameron Village area. You'll still need a car, but living in either of those places you could walk to quite a bit and downtown has a free bus. The North Hills area fits the bill too, but might be a bit out of your price range.

@sowk09 I've visited briefly, and did not have much time to explore. I'm someone who seems to keep moving south into warmer climate. Thank you for the suggestions! How expensive is the North Hills area? Right now I currently pay 1800 for rent, so anything lower than that would be amazing! Thanks again!

Just a tip that you've probably already considered. This isn't an ideal area for public transport. (Although Chapel Hill is another option and they do have free buses that are rather extensive.) You will almost certainly want a car, even in Chapel Hill. Since there's a good chance you don't have one in NYC, you probably want to factor in the added expense of a car payment, insurance, and gas when setting your housing budget.

I missed that you already mention a car in the OP...

I'm hoping to hear from Hash House Harriers in the area as well. I find the concept highly intriguing. If you don't find any, I'd love to consider joining you and start our own kennel.

As far as a place to live: I've been casually exploring Durham area! Lots of people there need a weekly Hash detox I would imagine!

As an avid hasher I had to check out what the NC region has to offer in Hash Kennels. It seems like there are a few good groups out there! I've hashed with the NYC and Brooklyn kennel, but in all honestly they do more of the runnin' and not enough of the drinkin'. Hence why I am an avid member of the CT Hashes, especially the New Haven Hash House Harriers. If I ever get down there I'll gladly invite you along! It's wicked fun! I've also gone to the Tulsa Hash before, I hope the Raleigh groups are as rowdy and fun as they are!

@irby No problem. And thank you for the added thought. I do need to consider the cost of a car into this factor. I haven't owned a car since I lived in Maine! lol, Oh how I loved that corrolla.

Default I lean more toward the "drinkers with a running problem" attitude ;)

Or drinkers with a <insert your problem here> problem!
