OK, this may be a strange thread but we have these 2 very BOLD birds who are constantly bothering us and our cat as sit out on our back screened porch. They are definitely a "couple" - gray with black eyes, black beaks and darker gray wings, about the size of a sparrow. They perch themselves just outside, contantly chirping and actually divebomb towards our cat as he sits on the porch railing just behind the screen. They are totally unafraid and have even sat on my patio table, less than a foot away from the screen and the cat. I realize they may be protecting a nest somewhere close by as they are so terirtorial. These birds are actually taunting us. Good thing there are only 2 or it would be reminscent of an Alfred Hitchcock movie! Any advice on how to stop this? Any known deterrants?

That is too funny I read this post, because we have the EXACT same problem at our house!! Two birds, just as you describe, constantly divebomb my poor Border Collie the entire time he's outside. Then after they divebomb, they go sit on the fence and "yell" at him, then divebomb some more. They are crazy! Luckily my dog doesn't seem to pay them any attention, so I don't think it's bothering him. I can't believe the birds are so bold- it is definitely reminiscent of Hitchcock's The Birds!

They are mockingbirds and they are protecting their young. I have a lot of them around my neighborhood in Cary. They are everywhere. Put out some suet cakes for them to eat and feed their young.

YES! I checked out your link and the pictures of the mockingbirds are identical to the divebombing birds!! Thanks In & Out! My cat used to be an outdoor cat and quite a prolific hunter until we moved to Cary (we're in a town house and are keeping him indoors). Wouldn't putting out suet just make them hang around more? As I'm typing, they are dive bombing a neighbor who is outside planting flowers!!! This is for the birds!

I have suet out for the mocking birds and they seem happy. The hang out right next to my Centex screened porch. When I walk outside, they just fly to the tree, then come back when I come in. It's like they know I am the source of their food and they are OK with it.

Mockingbirds are notorious for this, but they are great songbirds to have around. When I lived in a rural area, my 2 cats used to follow me to the mailbox and the mockingbirds would dive bomb straight for them... just before it would hit one of the cats, the cat would react, hit the ground and roll... so letting the cat out probably won't keep mockingbirds from doing this!

We had a nest on our front porch with protective dive bombing parents.
We started using the side door while the babies were in the nest, but we
forgot to tell the poor pizza dilivery guy.

By the time we got to the door he was cowering at the corner of the porch defending himself with soda and pizza boxes.

I am so glad to see the "real" name for these birds! We've always referred to them as "cat" birds because they are so aggressive towards cats. Thanks for the name and the link, In & Out!
